SMEC Foundation

The SMEC Foundation was established by the SMEC Group of Companies in 2001 to provide small-scale grant assistance to community groups in Australia and overseas.
The purpose of the Foundation is to:

bulletconsolidate SMEC's links with the communities in which the Group works
bulletprovide an umbrella for the community development activities which SMEC staff have undertaken in parallel with development projects for more than 30 years
bulletensure that SMEC's community support delivers the best possible social and developmental impact.

The inaugural Chairman of the SMEC Foundation was Doug Price, A.M., who was the Chief Executive of SMEC from 1975 to 1988. Since 2007 the Chairman has been Les Douglas, former Director Corporate Affairs in SMEC from 1995 to 2007 and a former Australian diplomat.

The Foundation operates with financial support from the SMEC Group together with staff donations. Decisions on the allocation of funds are made by the Chairman in consultation with a Management Committee consisting of Jill Hickson and Roger Bayliss (independent directors of SMEC Holdings Ltd) and Geoff Percival (Executive Director International West in SMEC). SMEC's Corporate Development Unit provides administrative support to the Foundation.

The SMEC Foundation is not intended to undertake major projects. Its existence is based on the conviction derived from SMEC's corporate experience that small amounts of money spent wisely can produce social and economic benefits out of all proportion to the financial cost.
